The vision of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a world where everyone has the opportunity to benefit from quality education and learn the values, behaviour and lifestyles required for a sustainable future and for positive societal transformation. ESD is for everyone, at all stages of life and in all possible learning contexts. ESD employs a partnership approach that engages multiple sectors and stakeholders – including media agencies and the private sector – and utilizes all forms and methods of public awareness raising, education and training to promote a broad understanding of sustainable development- http://www.unescobkk.org

The United Nations General Assembly on December 20, 2002 adopted, by consensus, a resolution establishing a United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). The resolution designates the ten year period as 2005- 2014. The Decade was launched internationally at United Nations headquarters in New York on March 1, 2005. A series of regional and DESD launches followed in different parts of the world.

Since the international launch in 2005, the decade has promoted education as the basis for a sustainable human society, and has helped in strengthening international cooperation towards the development of innovative policies, programmes and practices of Education for Sustainable Development. The regional launches of the Decade have been accompanied by regional planning frameworks or action plans. Furthermore, some countries have developed their national strategies in responses to the Decade.

This CD is a compilation of Education for Sustainable Initiatives from around the world. The information collected for this compilation has been done by searching for information on the Internet and contributions from Department of Environment and Water Resources, Australia and German National Commission for UNESCO. Since this compilation is mostly based on the information from the Internet, the information cannot be said as a comprehensive one. But we still believe that it is a useful resource on ESD initiatives available at one place.
